Ryan Giggs to Leave Manchester United After 29 Years

1st July 2016

It has been announced that Ryan Giggs, one of the most iconic figures of all time at Old Trafford, is set to leave Manchester United. It is thought that the situation came about thanks to new manager Jose Mourinho’s eagerness to make long-time friend Rui Faria his assistant manager, thus meaning that Giggs would have to make way. Despite United trying to find him a different position within the club, no agreement was reached, and instead United came to a settlement that sees Giggs leaving the club he’s represented for 29 years.

Giggs’ exit will undoubtedly be treated with sadness by the supporters of the club, however they will almost certainly understand his decision to leave. After all, many thought that he was the man for the manager’s position after Louis van Gaal left the club, and many also understand how annoyed he was with the manner of van Gaal’s departure. This was actually the second time he was overlooked for the manager’s position, after also being ignored after David Moyes left the club.

Giggs has been a part of the Manchester United set-up ever since he was a boy, joining the club at just 14 years of age. He made his first ever appearance for the club in a game against Everton in 1991, however few expected him to go on to play 963 times for United, winning 13 league titles, four FA Cup medals, four League Cups and, of course, two Champions League medals as well. He also played 64 times for Wales in this period, as well as took part in the 2012 Olympics as part of Team GB.

But what will come next for Giggs? Well, the fact that he has completed all of his coaching badges suggests that he’s ready to make the move into management. It’s not known where he might go though, and the fact that he has hardly any experience in management might mean that he has to drop down to the lower leagues initially. There will certainly be many clubs interested in securing his signature though, so Giggs should be back in work again pretty soon.

For Manchester United fans, Giggs’ departure is a sad one, but they’ll be excited to start their new era under Jose Mourinho. With new and exciting players already making their way to Old Trafford – including Zlatan Ibrahimović – next season could be an exciting one for the club.
